Doug Berger reports:
The iPhone has been out for about two years now, and it’s still a pain in the ass to sync your iPhone with your Google Calendar. Luckily, NuevaSync’s Beta service makes this process a breeze.
NuevaSync is a free service that transmits the Google Calendar of your choosing over the Microsoft Exchange protocol so your iPhone or iPod touch can treat it as an Exchange calendar. The process of setting it up is quite simple. We’ll walk you through the process of setting it up:
- The first step is to create an account on NuevaSync.com and set up your account. Their configuation site is even mobile friendly, so if you’re on your iPhone right now, no worries.
- They don’t support Gmail over exchange yet, so I would recommend only syncing with your calendar at this time. The service will sync up your Google contacts or Plaxo contacts with your phone, but this makes me nervous.
- OK, now it’s time to configure your iPhone. From the main menu screen tap “Settings”.
- Select Mail > Contacts > Calendar.
- Select Add Account.
- Choose Microsoft Exchange (the first option)
- Under “Email”, enter the e-mail address you used for NuevaSync registration. When you enter your e-mail address to sync, your device may warn you about a certificate being invalid. This is particularly likely if you use a Gmail address. It is part of Apple’s auto-configuration feature as it tries to guess the appropriate server name based on your info. Our SSL certificate is valid and secure. Note: This process works with Google Apps calendars as well.
- Under “Username” enter your NuevaSync username you used to register on their site. Under “Password” enter your NuevaSync password.
- Under “Description” you can leave the default or enter a description of your choosing. I used “Google Calendar” so I could tell it apart from my Outlook calendar. Tap “Next”.
- Your Apple device will display a message “Verifying Exchange account information” for a few moments.
- When it has finished, it will display a new field, “Server”. Enter “www.nuevasync.com” as the value. Tap “Next”.
- On the next page, turn off “Mail” since they do not support Gmail over Exchange at this time. Also turn off any other category you do not wish to sync. For example, if you want to sync only your calendar, make sure “Mail” and “Contacts” are both turned off. If you want to sync contacts and calendar, all you should turn off is mail.
- Tap “Save”. You should now see the little pin-wheel on the top of the screen spinning, which indicates it is syncing your calendar with your device.
That’s it! Head over to NuevaSync’s troubleshooting section for any issues you run into.
